FAQs About Change Management

What is change management?

Change management is the process of helping people successfully embrace new ideas. Organizations respond to evolving customer needs and market dynamics by implementing new strategies, processes, technologies, products, services, policies and more. But a great idea alone isn’t sufficient; its success hinges on widespread support and adoption by the people affected by it. That’s where change management comes in.

Why is change important to everyone in an organization?

Change is everybody’s job because organizational changes like new strategies, processes and technologies affect everyone and therefore require involvement across the board for success. ExperiencePoint offers various change management workshops tailored to build your organization’s change management capability. Our short-seat workshop, Real Change Starts Here, is designed to help everyone navigate change in their day-to-day work, while our change management simulation, ExperienceChange, offers a deeper dive designed for leaders and project teams who sponsor and champion change initiatives.

What's required for change to be successful?

To successfully adopt change, people must be ready, willing and able to embrace it. Our Real Change Starts Here workshop helps people practice the essentials of change by teaching a simple, three-step framework:

Step 1 – Ready – People need to understand the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of the change from the perspective of the organization.

Step 2 – Willing – People need to understand and care about the benefits of the change for themselves (sometimes known as “WIIFM” – What’s in it for me?)

Step 3 – Able – People need the right skills, and the organization needs to create the right conditions for behavior change to be sustainable.

How do I get buy-in from a large group of stakeholders?

Behavior change happens one person at a time. To scale behavior change across a large number of people requires a thoughtful and disciplined approach. Our ExperienceChange workshop enables practice with a tried-and-true, seven-step organizational change process that helps people:

  1. Align key stakeholders around the problem
    1. Understand
    2. Enlist
    3. Envisage
  2. Engage the organization around the solution
    1. Motivate
    2. Communicate
    3. Act
    4. Consolidate

What is an example of scaling change capability?

An example of successfully scaling change capability is the transformational journey undertaken by TransAlta within the energy sector. Facing industry upheaval, TransAlta looked to enhance collaboration, foster innovation and enable effective idea implementation across departments. By adopting ExperienceChange workshops and certifying internal facilitators, TransAlta empowered its workforce with a standardized change management approach.
